Opening Match between South Africa and West Indies

Host South Africa won the opening match of the Inaugural Twenty20 Cricket world Cup. Hosts defeated West Indies by eight wickets thanks to fantastic performances by Herschelle Gibbs, who made an unbeaten 90 off 54 balls and Justin Kemp an unbeaten 46 off 23 balls to see South Africa home with 14 deliveries to spare.

West Indies put a fighting total of 205- 6 in 20 overs with the first-ever century in Twenty20 cricket, by Chris Gayle who hammered 117 off 57 balls, with 7 fours and 10 sixes.
